With less than 150 Western Ground Parrots surviving today, the number of photos available is limited especially for birds in the wild.
Enjoy some of the pictures taken in the wild as well as images from Perth Zoo and meet some of the people who are working to save this critically endangered parrot from extinction.
The feature-length documentary "Secrets at Sunrise" is available for streaming. Additional video clips are found at the bottom section of this page.
These photos were taken in Fitzgerald River National Park in 2006. Unfortunately, the birds have not been recorded there since 2012.
A few birds were captured in in 2009-2010 and kept on the South Coast to determine whether they could be kept in captivity. In 2014 they were moved to Perth Zoo in the hope of establishing a captive breeding program. Some of these photos were obtained from CCTV cameras which monitor the parrots 24 hours a day.
