Description


 Home The Western Ground Parrot is a medium-sized parrot with mainly green and yellow feathers which have brown and black flecks giving it an excellent camouflage. It has a bright red band above the beak. Its tail is quite long.

Immature birds are duller in colour and lack the red band above the bill.

The following information should help identify the Western Ground Parrot from other parrot species occuring in the Southwest of Western Australia.

habitat low heath usually with open mallee, swamp dunes, beach, dense mallee forest, woodland
first sighting on ground or flushed from ground in trees, on fence, on powerline
flock size one or two three more than three
flight low over vegetation up into a tree
size similar to a rosella similar to ringneck or budgie
colour green, yellowish-green with yellow, black or brown flecks or bars. Red band above beak blue feathers or red feathers apart from red band above beak
